Tracing places: Between Absence and Inscription
Following a conference on Places - 2022
How to produce images of a place which do not fall into an ‘over-identification’ of the place? Which do not enclose it in a totalizing representation–for instance when the place is cloistered in a unique point of view? Which do not redeem the place as a univocality?
That is to say: How to go beneath the usual attitude of Western modernity that uses the perspectival view of space, technology and satellites to bring places into a pre-defined representation and system of thinking?
In my understanding, a place acts in a permanent confrontation of paths, memories, names, forces of transformation, ways of inhabiting, and perhaps there is a violence of the gesture when one wants to reduce this complexity of forms to a collection of views, or to mathematical coordinates in the horizontal plane.
